Climbing Montgo - Elephant Mountain
MontgoFor the fit and adventurous Montgo (Elephant Mountain) which sits between Javea and Denia is well worth a visit.

Montgo is 2500ft hight and dominates the skyline around the region.  The most obvious and easy place to start the climb is just off the mountain road (CV-736) between Javea and Denia. This starting point is at around 700ft above sea level meaning you have around 1800ft left of wlaking/climbing.

The terrain starts off fairly easy along paths with loose stones and rocks however it soon becomes fairly steep and narrow in areas with open edges not for those suffering with vertigo.  Above 1500ft the going gets tough with much steeper, narrow paths and high open drops.

Have a look at the short video below covering the route.

On this trip our 9 year old and my wife stopped and returned down at 1400ft due to my wifes vertigo.  Having reached the top, I would be confident that my 9 year old could have achieved the climb although I would have kept him very close and moved carefully towards the top.  There are many conflicting opinions as to how long the climb takes.  In our particular experience it took 1 hour to get to the summit and about 45 minutes to get down, this was at a very fast pace and I would leave around 2 hours to the top and an hour and a half to return down the same route at a steady pace.

Lots of water, food for energy and a mobile phone are definatly recommended.
